Launch of new IT Suite and celebration of local partnerships in Chapeltown
22/10

Chapeltown Enterprise Centre, in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University, officially opened new IT facilities at the Centre recently as part of Black History Month. The event celebrated the achievements of the many local organisations who work hard to support the Chapeltown community, in addition to showcasing the new facilities, which will be available to the local community.

The 15 state-of-the-art computers and renovation of a room
to make it more accessible to the less mobile have been funded
by Leeds Met Training, part of Leeds Metropolitan University.
Leeds Met Training regularly delivers courses at the centre,
enabling local people to access higher education in their
own community.

The afternoon promoted the successful supporting role that
organisations such as Chapeltown Enterprise Centre, Leeds
Met Training and other local groups provide in the local
area.
It was also an opportunity for people to see the facilities
available at the centre and find out about support services
offered in the area.
Rashid Ali, who completed an IT course at the Centre and now works and studies in the fields of IT and healthcare, said: “The new facilities are great. It is important to keep up with technological advances. I first became interested in learning more about computers when I was shown a programme that teaches young people about Islam. The more you find out about computers the more you want to learn.”

The new facilities were opened by Clinton Cameron MBE. Over the last forty years Mr Cameron has been a key participant in community activities in Chapeltown and Harehills. Mr Cameron said: “I am very pleased to see that Leeds Met has established a base right in the heart of Chapeltown. We think it is an extremely important and significant development for us.”

Chapeltown Enterprise Centre co-ordinator Calvin Wilkes said: “It
is particularly important to us that we have now managed to open
up and improve access to the centre.”
